Il 12 Agosto del 1991 usciva il “Black Album” dei Metallica capolavoro assoluto e disco metal più venduto al mondo. Ha superato infatti le 35 milioni di copie vendute ed è stato inserito dalla rivista The Rolling Stone nei 500 album migliori di tutti i tempi.
Si trattò di un enorme punto di svolta per la band, che abbandonò le sonorità tendenti al thrash dei dischi precedenti (operazione non particolarmente gradita ad alcuni fan di vecchia data) per avvicinarsi a sonorità più orecchiabili. In ogni caso, METALLICA consacrò definitivamente il gruppo al successo, inserendo i suoi membri nel novero dei più grandi artisti del periodo.
Il Black Album
E’ con questo disco uscito per la Elektra Records che i Metallica si rinnovano e ampliano il loro pubblico con uno stile più diretto. La registrazione ebbe luogo a Los Angeles, come produttore fu chiamato Bob Rock che costrinse la band ad un tour de force facendole registrare in presa diretta. Durante le registrazione sia Ulrich Hammet che Newsted divorziarono dalle proprie mogli e anche per questo nel Black Album c’è un fondo di rabbia e amarezza. Il cantante Hetfield trovò una dimensione più introspettiva come aveva consigliato Bob Rock.
Il Black album 30 anni dopo…
Il 10 Settembre scorso esce la celebrazione dell’album omonimo dei Metallica, meglio conosciuto come The Black Album. E’ indubbiamente uno dei dischi di maggior successo commerciale e di critica di tutti i tempi. Contiene una serie di singoli implacabili, “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam” e “Sad But True”.
Il master è a cura di Bob Ludwig al Gateway Mastering con la supervisione del produttore esecutivo Greg Fidelman. La 3CD Expanded Edition ha una copertina alternativa scelta da Lars Ulrich e include 3 CD con l’album appena rimasterizzato e inediti, demo, rough mix e tracce live. Include inoltre un libretto di 28 pagine. Per la celebrazione dell’ album più di 50 artisti interpretano la propria canzone preferita. All’interno troviamo artisti come Elton John, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Miley Cyrus, Dave Gahan dei Depeche Mode…
I proventi del “the Metallica Blacklist” saranno ripartiti tra “All within My hans Foundation” e altre società di beneficienza scelti dagli artisti. La prima cover è dei Ghost che rifanno “Enter Sandman” aggiungendo un intro piano voce. La seconda “Sad but true” interpretata da st Vincent , “Holier than thou” invece è degli Off. “The Unforgiven” cover dei Flatbush Zombies e dj Scratch ma soprattutto “Nothing else matter” affidata al frontman dei Depeche Mode Dave Gahan.
Una celebre copertina
La scelta della copertina del Black Album, come ormai noto fu una cover nera con un serpente a sonagli preso da una vecchia bandiera Americana simbolo di patriottismo e libertà. La decisione fu di Lars Ulrich, che voleva distinguersi dal canone delle copertine appariscenti che all’epoca andavano per la maggiore. La bandiera originale, su sfondo giallo, è accompagnata dalla frase “Don’t tread on me” (non calpestarmi), che, guarda caso, dà il titolo a uno dei brani contenuti nel disco. Da qui in poi tutto il resto è leggenda.
