Rock My Life ha incontrato Chris Holmes per un’interessante intervista in occasione dell’imminente data in cui sarà headliner del Fuck You We Rock Festival.
Chris ha risposto ad alcune domande della nostra Anna Paladin raccontandoci alcuni aneddoti della sula lunghissima carriera artistica.
Ecco l’intervista completa a questo straordinario artista.
Ciao Chris, benvenuto su Rock My Life e grazie per il tempo che ci stai dedicando. Ci piacerebbe iniziare dell’esperienza on the road con Metallica. Ti sei divertito? Ci sono stati problemi tra loro e W.A.S.P.?
Blackie li odiava e a loro non piaceva.
Siamo abbastanza sicuri che una riunione sarà impossibile, ma per te, qual è stato il periodo migliore per W.A.S.P.? Quali sono le canzoni che ami di più e quelle che non riesci proprio a sopportare?
“Headless children” è il mio album preferito perché sono riuscito a suonare tutte le mie chitarre. Blackie non era in studio quando stavo registrando, eravamo quasi sempre Mike Davis ed io. Blackie è arrivato il giorno dopo ed ha ascoltato quello che abbiamo fatto. Quindi per rispondere alla tua domanda, mi piace perché non avevo nessuno dietro di me con una pistola alla testa che mi dicesse che dovevo finire la canzone in due minuti. Quello che non mi piace è KFD.
Parlando del passato, puoi raccontarci qualche ricordo del periodo con le Psycho Squads?
Le Psycho erano una band killer, ma erano dieci anni in ritardo per farcela o meno nel mondo della musica.
Vorresti raccontarci qualche storia sulla famosa intervista in piscina di Decline of Western Civilization Part II?
Prima di tutto non era la mia piscina ma la casa di Stuart Copland, il fratello del batterista dei Police. Ero stupidamente ubriaco in quel momento, non ho nulla da nascondere.
Per quale motivo hai lasciato l’America e ti sei trasferito in Europa alcuni anni fa? Quali differenze hai riscontrato nello stile di vita e nella scena musicale?
Il business della musica è cambiato così tanto in America, i ragazzini non ascoltano più rock e ho sbattuto la testa in giro per L.A per dieci anni cercando di trovare musicisti con cui suonare e non ci sono riuscito. Ho quindi deciso di venire in Europa e tentare la fortuna qui.
Abbiamo parlato un pò del passato, guardiamo al futuro. Vuoi presentare la tua band Mean Man? Chi sono i membri? Vi conoscete da molto tempo? Siete amici dietro le quinte?
Ho due ragazzi della band Wicked Jackal: Ollie Tindall (chitarra e canzoni WASP) e Lex Gifford (basso). Sono bravi ragazzi di talento e facili da inserire. Sono abbastanza giovani da poter essere i miei nipoti haha. Il batterista Stephen Jackson del gruppo Heart Break Remedy è più vecchio e io ho suonato con lui più a lungo di Ollie e Lex, lo sappiamo e ci capiamo meglio, quindi sì lo considero un buon amico. Ho avuto un conflitto di interessi con i musicisti precedenti e non ha funzionato.
Nelle tue prossime date in Italia ascolteremo il tuo nuovo EP “Under the Influence” e stai lavorando ad un nuovo album. Inoltre suonerai in molti paesi. Parlaci di questi progetti.
Sono pronto per registrare l’intero album per la fine del 2019 e stiamo programmando il tour del 2020 anche fuori dall’Europa come il Nord e il Sud America e il Giappone.
Chi sono attualmente gli artisti preferiti di Chris Holmes? E le tue influenze? Cosa ti ispira quando scrivi le tue nuove canzoni?
Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, BB King. Potrei dirtelo finché non lo scrivo perché poi ogni canzone è diversa. Inizio scrivendo prima la musica e poi i testi arrivano dopo averla ascoltata e nasce così nella mia mente.
Ci salutiamo con un’ultima domanda e ti ringraziamo ancora per aver passato del tempo con noi. Adesso per favore potresti soddisfare una mia curiosità? Ho sentito che nella tua giovinezza c’è stato uno “scambio” di chitarre tra te e Eddie Van Halen. È vero? Com’è andata?
Nel 1978 sono stato in ospedale a letto per alcuni mesi, non potevo muovermi. Eddie è venuto nella mia stanza dopo il primo tour prima del secondo album, avevo acquistato lo stesso tipo di chitarra che aveva anche lui. Eddie l’aveva modificata per cambiare il suono ed ha preso in prestito la mia per il secondo album. Poi mi ha dato la sua chitarra modificata fino a quando ha finito l’album.

Hi Chris, first of all I thank you for the time you dedicate to answer to my questions. Let’s start about the on the road experience with Metallica. Did you have fun? There were problems between them and W.A.S.P.?
Blackie hated them and they didn’t like him
We are quite sure that a reunion will be impossible, but for you, what was the best era of W.A.S.P.? And what are the songs you love the most? And those that you just can not stand?
Headless children is my favorite album cause I played all the guitars on it . Blackie was not in the studio when I was recording, it was most of the time the engineer mike Davis and I . Blackie just came the next day and listened what we did . So for answer to the question that the one because I didn’t had anybody standing behind me with a gun on my head telling me I have to finish the song in 2 minutes. And the one I don’t like is KFD
Talking about the past, can you tell us some memories about the period with the Psycho Squads?
Psycho squad was a killer band, it was just 10 years too late in the time frame of making it or not in the music bussiness
Would you like to tell us some story about the famous pool interview from Decline of Western Civilization Part II?
First of all that was not my pool but the house of Stuart Copland, the brother of the drummer of Police. I was drunk idiot at the time, I have nothing to hide.
Why did you leave America and moved to Europe some years ago? Which differences have you found in the lifestyle and in music scene?
The music bussiness has change so much in America, the young kids doesn’t listen Rock and I beat my head around L.A for 10 years trying to find musicians to play with and was totally unsuccessful at it I just decided to come in Europe and try my luck out here.
Now that we’ve talked about the past, let’s take a look at the future. Would you introduce your Mean Man band? Who are the members? How long have you known each other? Are you also friends behind the scenes?
I have two kids from the band wicked jackals Ollie Tindall( guitar and WASP songs ) and Lex Gifford (bass), they are good kids talented and easy to go with . they are young enough to be my grandkids haha. the drummer Stephen Jackson from the band Heart break remedy is older and I played with him longer than Ollie and Lex, we know and I understand each other better then yes i consider him as a good friend. i had conflict of interest with the previous musicians and it didn’t work out.
In your next dates in Italy we will listen to your new EP “Under the Influence” and you’re working on a new album. Beside you’re going to play in many countries. Tell us about these projects.
I’m ready to recording the full album for end of 2019 and we decide for 2020 touring also out of Europe as North and South America and Japan
Who are currently your favorite artists? And your influences? What inspire you when you write your new songs?
Johnny winter, Jimi Hendrix, BB King. I could tell you until I write it because every song is different. I start by writing the music first and then the lyrics come after listening to the music and it will pop in my head.
We say goodbye with one last question and thank you again for spending time with us. With the last question, please, satisfy my curiosity: I heard that in your youth there has been an “exchange” of guitars between you and Eddie Van Halen. Is it true? How did it go?
In 1978 I was in the hospital in bed for fews months, I couldn’t move . Ed came in my room after the first tour before the second album, I had purchased the same kind of guitar that he had and he modified his which change the sound and borrowed mine for the second album. Then he gave me his guitar he modified until he finished the album.
